Details about the Efficacy-Implementation Study of PC CARES

Overview

The purpose of the study is to learn how community members support one another with a hope to increase actions that increase wellness and prevent suicide. The research evaluates the effects of Promoting Community Conversations About Research to End Suicide (PC CARES), a program designed to support suicide prevention in rural Alaska Native (AN) communities. It focuses on adult participants and the youth they are close to, aiming to increase suicide prevention knowledge, behaviors, and collaborative relationships for wellness and prevention. Researchers will track changes in adult participants' behaviors and knowledge over time, examine how the program spreads through the community, and assess its impact on youth outcomes like social support and connectedness.

The project also looks at what helps or hinders the program’s success in these communities to ensure it can be sustained and scaled. By combining cultural knowledge with scientific methods, PC CARES supports Alaska Native mental health workers and addresses youth suicide. The ultimate goal is to turn research into practical, culturally relevant tools that promote youth well-being and reduce suicide risk.
